Travel: Hawaii

Hawaii Big Island

The Hilo side of Big Island Hawaii proved to be more than we had hoped for. We liked the atmosphere, the scenery was beautiful with waterfalls, lush vegetation, many birds and of course the volcanoes. Uncle Billy's offered our style of accommodation, no more no less.

Volcanos National Park

After four days in Hilo we drove to Kona via beautiful Waipio Vally and set up camp in Uncle Billy's Kona. Not quite the same; not the accommodation, not the town and not the scenery. Landscape wise not much to see on this side of the island, Kona is a shopper's paradise (if you like to shop that is) and Uncle Billy's was less comfortable and the staff less service oriented. But this side of the island has more to offer underwater and on our first snorkelling expedition just from the beach we met three turtles. On a boat trip with Body Glove we did some diving and snorkelling and saw spinner and bottlenose dolphins. Check our dive pages for more on the diving.

Oahu

In Honolulu we stayed at the Waikiki Banyan, nice appartments, nice view, pool, close to the beach. Highlight of our stay was a dolphin encounter program at the Sea Life Park. Up close to a wholphin and a mink whale, it's not exactly a dolphin encounter, but who's picky at a moment like that?
